“Shawn of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” star Simon Pegg has beamed on board the Enterprise to play a plum part in the new “Star Trek” film. Pegg is reuniting with his “Mission Impossible 3″ director pal J.J. Abrams to play the role of the Enterprise’s Scotty, the chief engineer and right-hand transporter man for Captain Kirk and his crew. Pegg inherits the role from James Doohan, the actor who portrayed red-shirted Scotty in the original “Star Trek” series, through seven feature films and god-knows-how many sci-fi conventions.

Also landing a part in the movie is “Harold and Kumar” funnyman John Cho as Lieutenant Sulu, the starship’s navigator; Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Uhura, the ship’s communications officer; Anton Yelchin as Ensign Chekov, the navigator; and “Heroes” villain Zachary Quinto as the green-blooded science officer Spock. Also in the stars will be “Troy” and “Munich” leading man Eric Bana playing the movie’s villain. Filming on the eleventh “Star Trek” movie begins next month for a Christmas Day 2008 release. The big rumor concerns the budget for the picture which is whispered to be as much as $160 million dollars. For that price Paramount Pictures could just build their own satellite and launch it in orbit.
