Oscar for sale
October 16th, 2007

Orson Welles Oscar award being auctioned at SothebyIf you are looking to grab a piece of Hollywood history or just want to fill a space on your entertainment bureau’s shelf then save up your pennies and on December 11 be at Sotheby’s when the only Oscar that Orson Welles ever won will be auctioned off. The Academy Award was presented to Welles for co-writing the Best Screenplay for the 1941 classic “Citizen Kane” and was believed lost until it turned up a few years ago in the possession of a man who claimed Welles had given it to him in lieu of paying him for a job. Welles daughter Beatrice sued for possession of the statue and was awarded it before she put it up for sale herself in 2003. A charitable organization called the Dax Foundation then bought the Oscar and is now hoping to get $800,000 to $1.2 million for the award. As pricey as that figure is it’s expected to be reached at the auction even though the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences doesn’t like it when their babies are sold off as collectibles.
