willsmith_tomcruise.jpgCould anyone have imagined that when some TV producer decided to give a rapper nicknamed the Fresh Prince his own sitcom that he would go on to become one of the world’s biggest action stars? Not even Will Smith could have thought up that unlikely scenario but it’s precisely what happened to the player from the east coast with dreams of music and movie stardom. But even hit movies and songs fade with time. You know that you have really made it into the pop culture when Hollywood asks you to leave your handprints in the pavement outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and for Will Smith that is exactly what happened to him today.

Hundreds of Smith’s fans came out for the event as well as one surprise pal by the name of Tom Cruise. “I just love his commitment, I didn’t know he was going to be here today, when he says he’s somebody’s friend he doesn’t take that lightly, he really means it, he shows up and works hard and he makes me want to work hard and be better so I appreciate the inspiration,” Smith told the onlookers.

The “Ali”, “Independence Day” and “Men in Black” star then kneeled down and pressed his two palms into freshly laid cement before lifting them back up and grinning for the assembled cameras. Will’s new movie “I Am Legend” opens this week and has him playing hero in a world without people and surrounded by monstrous mutations.

“It inspires me when I look around and I see all of you coming out here to support me and honour my family like this,” Smith addressed the crowd as they cheered him on. “It makes me feel like I’m not doing enough, it makes me feel like to have all of this I’ve gotta change the world.”

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is also working on an update of “The Karate Kid” and just finished shooting a movie where he plays a fallen superhero opposite Charlize Theron.
