Will Smith’s Controversial Hitler Comment
December 24th, 2007

It seems to be the day for Will Smith news. In Saturday’s Daily Record, Smith discussed his feelings about the good in people, but stirred up some controversy with his thoughts on Hitler.
“Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘let me do the most evil thing I can do today’,” said Smith. “I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was ‘good’.Stuff like that just needs reprogramming.”
What developed after that was that World Entertainment News Network released a story over their wire feed with the headline SMITH: ‘HITLER WAS A GOOD PERSON,’.
Then in response to Smith’s comment, Jan Winter of Page Six wrote:
“Will, you’ve broken our hearts. It’s you that needs reprogramming.”
Talk about taking something out of context and being irresponsible. He never said that Hitler was a good person. Poptherapy is on your side Will. We know what you meant.
Will Smith is the flavor of the month and as typically happens, some will use a name and twist a story in order to milk the current Hollywood Golden boy or girl for all they are worth.
How about this? When he actually says that “Hitler is a good person”, you know, when the words actually come out of his mouth, then you can accuse him of it. Sound good?

I’m sorry – I don’t understand what everyone is finding so disconcerting about Smith’s comment.
No, that’s not true: I actually understand it, and I see it as an example of the widespread idiocy of the mass media / mass public.
I agree 100% with Smith’s comment. It’s a nuanced one: he IS NOT SAYING that Hitler was a good person. He is simply saying that, from an internal perspective, Hitler undoubtedly didn’t see his own actions as terribly evil or (what is more unfortunate for history) morally wrong.
I imagine that this is a true statement. This idea that every man, from the best to the worst, thinks himself (or herself) to be doing good, is an ancient one.
Of course, it flies over the head of most people today. People who take Smith’s statement and turn it into a “Hitler was good” Smith says in interview!
Oh my. Bunch of fucking morons.
