American Idol Top 7 Perform
April 16th, 2008
Well, it looks like we made it to the final 7 this year without having any type of embarrassment “vote for the worst” contestants on the stage. The loss of Michael Johns last week was a surprising result for everyone and actually added a little excitement to the show since this time it wasn’t as predictable as we were beginning to believe.
This week it’s Mariah Carey week which I think had some bad timing. After “inspiration” last week I think we could have used more of a change but this is what we got. I’m not a big Mariah Carey fan and neither are many people I know but she must have a decent following or AI wouldn’t have had her on the show.

I’m going to keep it short about David Archuleta. We all know by now that this kid can sing and he’s been doing it for years, but I’m starting to think that maybe would have been more succesful if he was never on American Idol. He’s got the talent but no matter what he does in the next X number of years he will be associated as some type of manufactured star from reality TV. |

Carly Smithson did the same type of decent job she does every week but it wasn’t spectacular. I’m not sure who is calling in the votes that are keeping her on the show but whatever force it is cannot likely keep up much longer as there are fewer contestants and the show gets more popular towards the end. The crew on American Idol are doing their job in dressing her a little nicer and managed to hide some of the tattoos were a little tired of seeing, but there is always that season 7 tattooed on her hands. Carly has already outstayed her welcome and we’re guessing she’ll be gone this week, and I think she knows it. |

Syesha picked another difficult song showing that she is going to take no shortcuts, and again she did a good job with it. She also looked great which never hurts in this competition. It is impressive that she continues to pull of some of these tough songs but I think it’s time she did something a little more common for us simple folk so we can connect. Not that many voters are going to realize the talent it took to sing a hard song, and might vote more if she just sang a song they liked. |

Brooke White sang “Hero” and this one is a very popular song that most everyone knows. The problem with sing something everyone knows is that if you don’t do it as good or as better as they do on the radio it just sounds like crap and everyone knows it. That was the case with Brooke this week and if it wasn’t for Carly still being on the show I would say that she is going home this week. She looks great and she certainly seems like a great person with talent in a Carly Simon sort of way, but I think she has reached the end of her time on AI. |

Man are we glad Kristy Lee Cook still in the competition. As I had stated before, even if she goes we’ll still have to put up pictures of her just because she kills the competition in raw attractiveness. She should make it at least a few more weeks on that alone, but to top it off her singing has been actually pretty darn good the last few weeks. This week she did “Forever” which was difficult to put a country twang on but she has shown some improvement each week. |

David Cook is one of our favorites for this competition with his mad rocker skilz, but Mariah Carey week, just like the last couple of weeks, just didn’t do him justice. I think he’s going to miss out on some votes this week just due to the songs he has to choose from, but hopefully he’ll make it through long enough to pull out some better songs. This week was just not so good for David. |

Jason Castro came out in true form and sang some laid back rendition of “I Don’t Want to Cry”. It was strange to listen to and just enforced the fact that Jason is going to be a big hit with stoners everywhere for a long time. I hope he makes it at least close to the end for the pure entertainment value that he brings. You can’t help but like him, but he unfortunately won’t be this years American Idol. |
That’s the rundown for week 6 until we get to this weeks vote, which will probably be not as shocking as last week. I think people will pay more attention after that shocker with Michael Johns.
Also, I just have to say that I think I liked it better when Paula just agreed with whoever spoke before her in the judging. Earlier in the year I was impressed that she was pulling out her own opinion and seemed to have some improved self-confidence, but now it’s just becoming a burden for her. This week she really seemed to have some trouble getting a full thought out of her head and it was just kinda’ painful to watch.
