Parachute Discovery Ignites D.B. Cooper Legend
March 26th, 2008

Parachute Ignites D.B. Cooper LegendA torn and tangled parachute was discovered by some children in southwest Washington – the heart of D.B. Cooper country.

Many believe the parachute belonged to the legendary D.B. Cooper, an aircraft hijacker who on November 24, 1971 jumped from the back of a Boeing 727 with $200,000 in ransom money and was never found.

Cooper made his legendary jump as the plane was flying over the Pacific Northwest of the United States somewhere over the Cascade Mountains, possibly over Woodland, Washington.

The case is famous for its utter lack of evidence, but a few clues have been gathered over the years. In February 1980, a family found $5,800 in decaying $20 bills on the banks of the Columbia River beach. In October of 2007, the FBI announced it obtained a partial DNA profile of Cooper from the tie he left on the hijacked plane.

The FBI is currently analyzing the parachute to determine if it belonged to Cooper. If this really is Cooper’s parachute it will solve the mystery of where he landed, but it will also fan the flames of D.B. Cooper lore.

Liger Born, Bred for its Skills in MagicI would have to agree with Napoleon Dynamite in that the Liger is “”pretty much my favorite animal” as well.

Lira, a three-month-old liger cub has become a bit of a celebrity in the Russian city where she’s kept as a pet. The cub currently lives with her trainer, Pavel Zabelkin, in a flat in the eastern Russian city of Yekaterinburg. Pavel’s parents work with wild cats in a circus in a nearby city.

Apple Logo Makes You Smart
March 19th, 2008

Apple Logo Makes You SmartApple has always enjoyed a great deal of cachet which most technology vendors lack. This is in no doubt due to their brilliant marketing campaigns over the years which have ingrained in us the images of intelligence and independence when we think of Apple.

Now it seems that there is some scientific evidence to prove that the Apple brand can give you these traits according a study by Duke University. The research found that even brief exposure to popular brands can cause people to behave in ways that mirror those brands’ traits.

The researchers selected Apple and IBM for their study because of the distinct and well-defined brand personalities. According to physorg.com:

The team conducted an experiment in which 341 university students completed what they believed was a visual acuity task, during which either the Apple or IBM logo was flashed so quickly that they were unaware they had been exposed to the brand logo. The participants then completed a task designed to evaluate how creative they were, listing all of the uses for a brick that they could imagine beyond building a wall.

People who were exposed to the Apple logo generated significantly more unusual uses for the brick compared with those who were primed with the IBM logo, the researchers said. In addition, the unusual uses the Apple-primed participants generated were rated as more creative by independent judges.

Along with a new MacBook Air, now I just need to rock a fauxhawk, grow a soul-patch, get some horn-rimmed glasses and I will feel smart and creative. I wonder how my Kool-Aid Reeboks will affect my behavior. Will I have the sudden urge to run through a wall and scream “Oh Yeah!”?
