New Robocop Movie On The Way
June 12th, 2008

Your move punk
From the Licensing International Expo in New York, comes this first look at a poster for MGM’s remake of RoboCop.

I’m not so sure about this guys. Robocop was cool and all, but as cyborgs go, he was always a bit on the lame side. I would have expected that they would have updated the look a bit more. All they did was add a Battlestar Galactica Cylon look. Here’s to hoping we get something superior to the original movies, but with the same kind of weird humor.

Get Your Cheap Geek On: All Star Wars Fest Comes to Basic Cable
March 24th, 2008

starwars-spike.jpg

“A few weeks from now on a network buried in basic cable…”

Star Wars fans too cheap to rent the entire saga on DVD get ready: Spike TV is bringing all six movies to the small screen in a Vader loving, lightsaber swinging event stemming many hours of your short life in April.

Spike TV said it will air the complete Star Wars Saga starting Friday, April 4 through Sunday, April 6, and Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 13. It will include the broadcast premiere of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and the basic cable premieres of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.

This will apparently mark the first time all six movies are being presented together on basic cable on the same network. All six are “digitally re-mastered versions of the films, shown uncut and presented in HD where available.” Lots of extra Star Wars material will be thrown in, giving all of you Princess Leia fanatics something to once again dream of.

Arthur C Clarke Is No Longer With Us…
March 18th, 2008

Arthur C Clarke
It’s a sad day….We’ve lost one of the most brilliant minds not only in science fiction, but outside of Science Fiction as well, Arthur C Clarke.

He was one of my heroes. To many he will forever be the writer that worked with Stanley Kubrick in creating the science fiction Masterpiece 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. In fact, he was much more then that.

He was a true master, writing masterpieces like RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA or CHILDHOOD’S END as well as 4 books in the 2001 saga. He was also responsible for the advent of the telecommunications satellite Arthur moved to Sri Lanka in the 1950s where he spent the rest of his life.

What he left was an enduring legacy of wonder and exploration, not only of the physical universe, but our place in it. Whatever waits for us in the great beyond, you can be sure that Arthur is enriching and enboldening it.

Who knows, now that he is one with the cosmos, he may just make like the monolith and remain ever watchful as we go about our very small business.

Darth Vader & Yoda Cookies
March 7th, 2008

Darth Vader
Mmmmm. Cookies. Zoë Lukas is a desert maker who makes wonderful Yoda and Darth Vader cookies. Here’s a handmade chocolate-espresso Darth Vader cookie, made to help promote the Franklin Institute’s Star Wars exhibit. Check out the Yoda cookie below.

Darth Vader and Yoda cookie will fight for your mouth space. Once they are chewed in all their delicious moth watering glory, you will feel the Force flow through you…Though that could be the sugar rush.

I imagine a plate of these Vader cookies set out in the Death Star War room, with Tarkin and the rest all munching away. Vader using the force to lift one and levitate his way…Then he would get pissed off because his helmet was in the way. Then they would all laugh their asses off at him and promptly die.

One of our favorite robots. Gort is from the 1951 science fiction classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still. He can now be yours if you have the stones and money, to own this amazing hunk of robot.

It’s on eBay (current bid is over $5000 with 2 hours to go.) It’s a museum-quality replica standing eight feet tall, and features some remote-controlled mechanical moves. The seller is only allowing local pickups because of the size. The fiberglass reproduction was handcrafted by the robot builders at Fred Barton Productions, and has been on public display for the last few years.

I must have it.
